How We Started

From Our Founder

Duane Kalinowski
Owner & CEO at All Points

I am a Wisconsin native but moved to Atlanta in the early 90s to pursue a career in logistics and ultimately open All Points. I would be lying if I said that the golf courses and weather in Georgia were not contributing factors to leaving Wisconsin. Though I no longer live there, I spend the summers and fall at my farm in north-central Wisconsin, working on food plots and enjoying the recreation of the beautiful Wisconsin outdoors.

My inspiration for starting All Points came from observing a growing number of requests and opportunities to provide fulfillment services for a number of large Atlanta based companies. I was working for a local courier company and had kept getting asked if we provided fulfillment services? Not knowing what “fulfillment services” was, I said no and did not think much of it. You can only get the same request so many times before you say to yourself, “maybe I should look into this.” Once I realized the scope and service involved, I understood that this was A. something I could be doing and B. something I should be doing. With a handful of requests, I went out and leased a very small warehouse, bought some racking and a pallet jack and moved into my new South Atlanta estate. Yes, I moved into my warehouse because everything I had the time was invested in this 5,000 sq/ft warehouse in South Atlanta. With a mattress, a fridge, a TV, my dog Baxter and an entrepreneurial spirit, I had everything I needed to start All Points.

Q&A with All Points Founder, Duane Kalinowski

Background and Company Origin

Can you provide an overview of your background and what inspired you to start your 3PL company?

In '94, I moved from the cold of Wisconsin to Atlanta, leaving behind a Fortune 100 job after an unwanted transfer. After a stint with a courier service, where I significantly increased revenue and secured major clients, I discovered the world of fulfillment. This led me to start my own venture, particularly after securing a pivotal contract for the '96 Olympics, which marked a significant turning point in scaling the business.zz

How did you come up with the name for your company, and is there a story behind it?

"All Points" was inspired by our aim to offer comprehensive logistics solutions, reflecting our commitment to enhancing efficiency and reducing costs at every point in the supply chain. This was particularly driven by our initial focus on streamlining printed materials distribution for our clients.

What was the vision or mission that drove you to establish your own 3PL business?

Post-'96 Olympics, advice from a Coca-Cola executive about not overextending reshaped my vision. Inspired by a Milwaukee butcher shop's community feel, I aimed to create a similar culture within my company, emphasizing employee well-being and tailored client solutions, blending personal touch with professional service.

Since the inception of your 3PL company, what significant milestones have you achieved in terms of growth and expansion?

Key milestones include expanding our facilities from a 60,000 square-foot space to a 160,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility, nearly doubling our pallet capacity and significantly enhancing service efficiency, driven by our commitment to quality and a focus on employee well-being.

Could you share any unique or challenging experiences that motivated you to take the entrepreneurial leap into the logistics industry?

The leap was motivated by a proposal to Coca-Cola, leading to the early challenges of undercapitalization and operational hurdles in a 10,000-square-foot space. These challenges taught me the importance of understanding limits and prioritizing employee well-being, shaping my approach to business.

Leadership and Philosophy

What is your leadership philosophy, and how do you inspire and motivate your team?

My philosophy centers around servant leadership. It's about showing genuine care, listening, and empathizing with the team. By valuing and understanding team members on a personal level, we create a motivated and supportive work environment.

What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?

The Bible has been a guiding light in my life, while "Atlas Shrugged" has influenced my views on accountability and the importance of hard work. Both emphasize the significance of personal responsibility, integrity, and doing the right thing for the right reasons.

How do you balance work and life as an entrepreneur in a demanding industry?

Family always comes first. By fostering a sense of ownership among team members, I ensure a balance that allows me to prioritize my family without compromising the company's success. This approach has been key in creating a sustainable work environment where everyone feels valued and invested.

Can you share a memorable or inspiring story related to your experiences as a business owner?

Our partnership with RaceTrac Petroleum stands out. Among 3,000 vendors, being repeatedly recognized as Vendor of the Year is not just an honor but a testament to our team's hard work and the strong, effective partnerships we've built with our clients.

In your journey as a 3PL founder, what have been the most rewarding and personally fulfilling moments?

Watching our employees grow and develop has been incredibly rewarding. The evolution of the company from being synonymous with my leadership to a team-driven entity, where 'All Points' is the go-to solution, marks a significant and fulfilling milestone in our journey.

Insights

How do you see the future of 3PL and logistics evolving, and what strategies do you have in place to adapt?

The future is set to be heavily influenced by automation, with scalable automation from leaders like Amazon showing the way. As AI and robotics become more accessible, we anticipate they will bring unprecedented efficiency and scalability to the supply chain. Our strategy involves staying at the forefront of these technologies, ensuring we remain adaptable and competitive in this rapidly evolving landscape.

What is your approach to leadership and tech?

Our proactive approach to embracing innovation is largely attributed to our forward-thinking leadership team. We prioritize staying at the forefront of technological advancements, including AI and robotics, to enhance our service offerings. As our company grows and welcomes new generations into our team, we emphasize the importance of leveraging the latest tools and technologies to complement our exceptional services.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own 3PL?

To those dreaming of starting their own 3PL business, my advice would be to proceed with caution and strategic foresight. Reflecting on my early days, particularly my partnership experiences with giants like Coke, the lesson I learned was the importance of pacing your growth. The old wisdom of "Don't bite off more than you can chew" is incredibly pertinent in this industry. It's essential to be acutely aware of your operational limits and to avoid overcommitting. True growth and success come from consistently delivering on your promises, maintaining the quality of your service, and upholding your integrity. Striking a careful balance between your ambitions and your practical capabilities is critical.

Tech and Operations

What tech stack and outsourced service providers do you use at your business?

The backbone of our operation is our WMS/OMS, Veracore, which has been a pivotal part of our setup since 1998. It's integral to both the operational side and the interface our customers interact with. For handling larger, retail-focused programs, we utilize SPS Commerce for EDI, ensuring seamless transactions.

What is your approach to the evolving logistics industry?

Our proactive approach to embracing innovation is largely attributed to our forward-thinking leadership team. We prioritize staying at the forefront of technological advancements, including AI and robotics, to enhance our service offerings. As our company grows and welcomes new generations into our team, we emphasize the importance of leveraging the latest tools and technologies to complement our exceptional services.
